When the food server brought it out... immediately the other guests started looking around wondering who in the hell shit their pants. It smelled like a concentrated manure pile on a farm. Like the ones you find in old Japan. The taste wasn't as bad as the smell and was the consistency of jerky. Much nastier in smell than Nordic lutefisk. I had it in an authentic Japanese restaurant in the Bay Area, CA. When the food server brought it out… immediately the other guests started looking around wondering who in the hell shit their pants.

I'm getting it that Sei Shonagon's Pillow Book is a different animal, but I have been reading that there were other Pillow Books (written by Taoist Monks?? contradictory info' as to whether they were for brides??). I guess I'm wondering whether all Shunga are Pillow Books, and if all Pillow Books are Shunga? If the Shunga to Pillow Book connection is 1 to 1, then I guess what I am looking for is translations of the text in the background of the prints. I have found the one for the most famous Diver Girl and Octopi / Dream of the Fisherman's Wife. Only snippets of other prints, but I see tons of text in the reproductions. Any insight or recommendations in regard to this issue would be greatly appreciated.
