Years ago, a friend told me I should create a performance art piece from ancient asian Pillow Books, because the text in them was often in dialogue and/or story format.

I'm getting it that Sei Shonagon's Pillow Book is a different animal, but I have been reading that there were other Pillow Books (written by Taoist Monks?? contradictory info' as to whether they were for brides??). I guess I'm wondering whether all Shunga are Pillow Books, and if all Pillow Books are Shunga?

If the Shunga to Pillow Book connection is 1 to 1, then I guess what I am looking for is translations of the text in the background of the prints. I have found the one for the most famous Diver Girl and Octopi / Dream of the Fisherman's Wife. Only snippets of other prints, but I see tons of text in the reproductions.

Any insight or recommendations in regard to this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ralph

As the owner of www.shungaart.com, it was wonderful to see additional articles discussing the Shunga artwork. I will pass this article on to my Shunga art fans.

Coming from Paul's link. A very interesting and well written article. From what I've heard of modern Japan, sex is very repressed today.

Fascinating article! I would have preferred a larger font, though. My eyes are old.
